Exploring Tuscany All-Around: 4 Day Trips from Florence

Though it’s understandably easy for Florence to steal the show, Tuscany keeps more cultural, architectural, and natural gems in its direct surroundings.

At Slow Tour Tuscany, we want you to experience Tuscany all-around. From the city into the countryside and back: here are four day trips to start with:

1) On the Trails of History: Siena and San Gimignano
Let’s follow the literal trails of history
:

From the middle ages to this day, the Via Francigena has been walked by millions of pilgrims on their way to Rome. A panoramic drive will lead you to Siena — the city of Palio, the most ancient road horse race in the world. Did you know that the Piazza del Campo, the square in front of Siena’s iconic Tower di Mangia that rises 102 meters into the sky, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world?

Its infamous shell shape certainly catches eyes. So do the horses and their riders that race through the crowds twice a year. Like most cathedrals in Tuscany, also the Duomo di Siena does not disappoint! Skip the line to explore this medieval church, use our mobile map to walk the streets of Siena and enjoy a lunch back at the Piazza del Campo.

You feel energised after your meal? Perfect, because your day isn’t over just yet! San Gimignano might be small in size but don’t underestimate this gem in the Tuscan countryside. The walled medieval hill town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the origin of wines such as the “Vernaccia”, and the home of Dondoli’s artisan ice-cream. The gelato world champion has won praise from celebrities and tour guides alike. But taste for yourself! Whether you need a ride to explore these places on your own or whether you wish for the detailed knowledge of one of our certified guides — don’t miss these UNESCO Heritage Sites and join your customised tour here

2) Wonders of the World:
 Pisa

We’ve seen the pictures, but have you ever attempted to hold the Leaning Tower of Pisa yourself? Find out why the square is called the “Field of Miracles” and what Galileo Galilei has to do with the marble monuments surrounding this medieval wonder of the world. That’s right: The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the 7 World Wonders

From the cemetery to the baptistery, the Cathedral, and the Leaning Tower itself: Our guides are professional art historians and will let you in on all they know. Book your private tour here

3) Harmony between mankind and nature:
Cinque Terre National Park

If you’ve already done your homework you will know that Cinque Terre technically isn’t in Tuscany. But did you also know how easily this UNESCO World Heritage Site can be visited from Florence?

Located on the Tuscan-Ligurian border, the Cinque Terre National Park features the longest dry wall system in the world. 6.730 km (or 4180 miles) — that makes this secular work longer than the Chinese Wall! But there’s more. Violet cliffs, colored houses, and the green-blue sea: the composition and colors of these five fishing villages are every photographer’s dream come true! Are you ready for fresh sea food, “Sciacchetrà” wine, and stunning views? Our guides have a special background knowledge of the environment. You can join our tour here.
