The Proper Tuscan Getaway: Touring Italy In The Vintage Fiat 500

Through the theatrical streets of Florence and into the golden light of Tuscan roads: Nothing says “Italian getaway” like a tour in a vintage Fiat 500!

To this day, 52 years after its first production in 1957, the vintage Fiat 500 is still making headlines around the world. A symbol of Italy’s long-awaited economic boom after decades of poverty, war and anguish, the history of this tiny, picturesque car is fascinating — not only for Italians

In fact, for its 50th anniversary the beloved Fiat 500 moved into New York City’s Museum of Modern Art where it became part of MoMA’s permanent collection. Since then, the international buzz has continued: “The Fiat 500 is a true icon of automotive history that managed to change the way cars were designed and produced in Italy,” Martino Stierli, the Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA explained to La Repubblica.

In 2019, the iconic Fiat 500 gained additional recognition as one of the centrepieces of MoMA’s The Value of Good Design exhibition, which puts a spotlight on the most influential and life-changing creations of the past 80 years. (The exhibition takes place until the 27th of May 2019.)

Here in Italy, we couldn’t be prouder of our little 500. The first car that was accessible to all Italians back in the day, the iconic Fiat 500 continues to put smiles on the faces of those who still spot it on the streets of Italy today.

By now you’ve probably understood that this tiny, oftentimes colorful car, which may or may not look like it recently made its grand escape from the miniature museum, actually plays quite the important role in our Italian culture

Now, looking at it and taking pictures with the quirky 500 is fun already — driving it is a whole other level! At Slow Tour Tuscany, we’ve created a special tour that lets you experience the best our country has to offer — all with the help of our little friend

From the panoramic Piazzale Michelangelo and into the hills of Chianti: Your expert guide will lead the way — up and down narrow lanes, past historic villas, through rolling vineyards and endless fields of olive trees. You’ll see there’s something special about the Fiat 500 if you pay attention to the looks on the faces around you. We’re sure they’ll be smiling just as much as you!

Next, we’ll stop at a local and family-run vineyard. If you want a taste of the local Italy, you’ll have to taste their wine and olive oil! Look at this as the appetiser as we will make sure you won’t drive home hungry: A typically Tuscan lunch will make your Italian getaway complete.

Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to capture the perfect shot of you and your four-wheeled companion throughout this tour.
