Monteriggioni is a little, medieval village built in 1200 and characterized by its perfectly preserved belt of walls. In the village’s center, we have time to stroll through the streets and grab a coffee before heading back to the van. From here, we reach
Siena in 20 minutes!
Siena is the pearl of the surrounding Tuscan countryside that is still dotted with ancient castles that are giving us glimpses into ancient times past.
As you explore the streets of the old town you will discover that there’s a lot more to Siena than just its spectacular, century-old rivalry with Florence. From artists such as Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, all of whom were born here, to Palio, the most ancient road horse race in the world: The people of Siena care deeply about their traditions and treasure the talent that calls this place home.
Your guided walking tour of Siena starts on the main road which coincides with the famous “Via Francigena”, the route pilgrims have been taking on their way to Rome for centuries. Graced with fountains, palaces and little, hidden gems everywhere, Siena’s streets will lead us to the Duomo. Thanks to your “Skip the Line” ticket, you are entering the cathedral without the delay caused by waiting queues to take in the Duomo’s baptistery as well as the restored libreria Piccolomini, a masterpiece of renaissance painting.
The tour ends in the core of Siena’s shell-shaped heart, the Piazza del Campo. As you are crossing what is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world, you will learn all about Palio, the traditions behind the most ancient road horse race in the world, and the architectural works of art you are surrounded by, including the Palazzo Pubblico and the Fonte Branda.
